Start with kataba and spot the difference between -tu, -ta, and -ti.

The idea

Conjugation means changing a verb to match its subject. Kataba means he wrote: Arabic commonly names a verb with this past-tense form, rather than an infinitive. For I and you, use katab- plus -tu, -ta, or -ti. The short final vowel changes the person, so keep it visible and pronounce it in these drills.

كَتَبَ

kataba — he wrote

anaa — I

-tu marks I, for any speaker.

كَتَبْتُ

katabtu — I wrote

anta — you (one male)

-ta addresses one male.

كَتَبْتَ

katabta — you (one male) wrote

anti — you (one female)

-ti addresses one female.
