Fourteen to seventeen

Build four teen names and keep the joining t sound.

Counting pattern

In these masculine teen forms, the first part ends in -ta before ʿashar. Compare khamsa (five) with khamsata ʿashar (fifteen). There is no wa (and) between the parts of 11–19. We pause at the end, saying ʿashar; in connected grammatical speech these teen forms end in ʿashara. All base letters are familiar by this point; ة and hamza were introduced with shadda and laam–alif. If these signs are new to you, revisit that lesson. Names below use pause pronunciation without final case endings.

١٤ – ١٧

14 to 17

14 — ١٤

Say the first part with -ta, then ʿashar; ١ marks one ten and ٤ marks four ones.

أَرْبَعَةَ عَشَر

arbaʿata ʿashar — 14

15 — ١٥

Khamsa becomes khamsata before the teen part. Keep kh distinct from ordinary k.

خَمْسَةَ عَشَر

khamsata ʿashar — 15

16 — ١٦

Keep the doubled t of sitta and pronounce the ending -ta before ʿashar.

سِتَّةَ عَشَر

sittata ʿashar — 16

17 — ١٧

Ayn occurs in both parts; the first part ends in -ta, not just -a.

سَبْعَةَ عَشَر

sabʿata ʿashar — 17
