A world of colors
Read and remember red, blue, yellow, and green.
Start with the color names
Learn these masculine singular forms first, said on their own without final case endings. Color adjectives change to agree with the noun they describe; feminine forms are not always made by adding ة. For now, match each written name to its meaning. The color samples are memory aids, and every sample has a written label.
أَحْمَر
aḥmar — red
Red
Say aḥ-mar, with short a vowels. The dotless ح is the breathy throat sound ḥ, not ordinary h.
أَحْمَر
aḥmar — red
Blue
Say az-raq. Sukuun closes the first syllable on z; finish with deep qaaf, not kaaf.
أَزْرَق
azraq — blue
Yellow
Say aṣ-far. Use emphatic ṣ, keeping it distinct from ordinary s; both a vowels are short.
أَصْفَر
aṣfar — yellow
Green
Say akh-ḍar: خ gives kh as in loch, then ض gives emphatic ḍ. Both letters have a dot above.
أَخْضَر
akhḍar — green
