B, d, and p in new shapes

Meet be, de, pe and practise telling them apart.

One letter, two cases

Ukrainian uses 33 Cyrillic letters, read from left to right. Capitals start sentences and names. These lessons use upright print: handwriting and italics can look different. A letter name is a label; the sound cue tells you how to read it. The soft sign is a letter but has no sound of its own.

be

Б б makes b. Do not confuse it with В в, which makes v. Notice the different upper strokes.

de

Д д makes d. In upright print, look for the broad base and small feet; handwriting and italics can look different.

pe

П п makes p. It has a top bar across two legs. Р р makes r despite looking like Latin P.
