Food, quantities and prices
Order a simple meal and read amounts.
At a food stall
nasi = cooked rice; ayam = chicken; sayur = vegetables/a vegetable dish; roti = bread; teh = tea; kopi = coffee; gula = sugar. Saya mau nasi = I want/would like rice. Tanpa gula = without sugar. Dan means and.
Count and measure
satu, dua, tiga, empat, lima = one to five; sepuluh = ten; ribu = thousand. dua roti = two breads; dua gelas air = two glasses of water; satu porsi nasi = one portion of rice. A number already gives plural information; do not automatically reduplicate the noun.
Useful units and prices
gelas = glass; porsi = serving; buah is a general item classifier in phrases such as dua buah apel (two apples). Classifiers are not English articles and are often omitted. Sepuluh ribu rupiah = ten thousand rupiah. Apel means apple.
Saya mau dua gelas air tanpa gula.
