Choose only des or der in complete noun phrases.

The idea

In a phrase such as die Tür des Hauses, choose the missing article from the owner/related noun after the blank: Haus is neuter, so des. The gender of the first noun, Tür, does not determine this article. Look at the noun immediately after the blank.
