Five vowels, five starting points
Meet an, en, in, on, un and practise telling them apart.
Read from left to right
These lessons use Mkhedruli, the everyday Georgian script. Each letter keeps its identity wherever it appears in a word; there are no Arabic-style joining forms. Mtavruli capitals appear in headings and emphasis, but everyday Georgian does not capitalise the first letter of a sentence.
an
An is the vowel a, like the a in father.
ა
an
en
En makes a short e, approximately the vowel in bed.
ე
en
in
In makes ee, as in see. Keep it a single vowel, not English eye.
ი
in
on
On makes a single rounded o, without the glide at the end of English go.
ო
on
un
Un makes oo, as in food. Compare უ ი: un has an extra curl.
უ
un
