A book and the book

Use մի and the definite endings -ը and -ն in specified contexts.

Indefinite and definite

գիրք = book; մի գիրք = a book. Definite endings attach to the noun: գիրքը = the book (in isolation or before a consonant); կատուն = the cat. կատու means cat.

The next sound matters

After a vowel use -ն. After a consonant, -ն can appear before a following vowel-initial word in connected speech: Գիրքն այստեղ է։ Before այստեղ, this lesson accepts both Գիրքն and Գիրքը. Before the copula է, practice -ն: գիրքն է. Do not use -ն before every consonant-initial word.

Small vocabulary

սեղան table → սեղանը; լավ = good; նոր = new; սա = this (as a pronoun). Սա մի գիրք է։ = This is a book. Գիրքը լավ է։ = The book is good.
