The beautiful swimming pool
Let's talk immediatly about something
incredibly beautiful: the swimming pool.
It's 25 meters long, it has 5 lines, there are showers, a moveable floor and deck chairs... Therefore, if you like swimming, definitely take your swimsuit with you (it's free of charge for occupants)!
The changing rooms
Just be careful (it is not all a bed of roses):
Choose with
care
the time you go there, or you could meet a herd of 30-40 children that are having swimming lessons. Although Austrian kids are angels compared with Italian and Spanish ones, they can still be quite noisy. Also the depth of half of the swimming pool will be set at 0,8 metres, so you can only swim in a 10x15 square, but the first line will probably be booked for a private course. You can now enjoy a space of 10x10 square metres. Claustrophobic, eh? But, if you are good at geometry, you can use the diagonal (about 14 m long). Just be careful not to crash with other maths experts in the centre!
So, read carefully the schedule at the entrance of the swimming pool!

You've got mail
There's very little to write about them. They're on the ground floor, on the way to the offices.

Table football. Take your own ball!
You can play ping pong in the basement (don't forget to ask for the rackets and the balls at reception). In the background you can see a
photocopier.
There are also 3 table football tables. Small problem: there's no ball to play with! We asked at reception and the answer was "We don't have them, but you can try with the ping pong balls". Anyway, even with these difficulties, we managed to organize the First Raab Heim's Table Football Competition

The washing machine
In this room (basement) you can find 4 washing machines and 3 driers. Considering that there are more than 300 people in this building, it's better that you book a washing machine in time. There are still available places for August 2009. Joking aside, it's not unusual that you go down and find no place for you. Smart people go there on Saturday night (many times someone has suggested having a Laundry Party) or at 2 AM.
You can also iron your clothes here.
Anyway, you won't be bored: in the Laundry there's also a table football. Without a ball.
And there's something else: I really have a lot of problems with washing machines, so no wonder that after the first attempt all my pullovers seem like they were used by cats to sharpen their nails. But when I saw many housework experts with spoiled dresses I realised that maybe the machines also have some small problems. The main problem seems to be the driers (the programs are written in German or in Czech, so may be confused). They really dry clothes, infact they look like they crossed a sand storm. Be very careful!
The Laundry. Handle with care!

I didn't have lot of problems with the people in the office (yet). They open early in the morning. they let me vent and most of the time their explanations are clear and useful (especially when it's about the rent cheque). I have to say that sometimes they're unprofessional, because they give you incompleted or false information, they have stupid ways to solve problems (they create new, bigger ones) and you have to shout or make threats if you want to obtain something.
But I also wish to report some experiences from my friends: they already wrote about the switch problem but the funny part is that they reported it to the office. The dialogue went something like this:
"There's a problem in the room, because my roommate and I can't access the net at the same time with our computers."
"We wrote
that there's an internet connection in your room. Does the connection work?"
"Sure..."
"Then YOU have a problem. Next, please" That's why the majority of the people here think that the office's employees are really unfriendly. But that's nice compared with an email that at least 2 people, who went to the office to pay their fees in different days, received:
Dear inhabitant,
Last week you paid the rent for October in the home office. As we balanced the
cash exactly € 175,- were missing and we know that you took this amount again.
Therefore I request to you to come immediately to the home office and return the
money.
Thank you very much in advance! |
Incredible, eh?
At least, they don't let you wait too much when you report a problem in your room. The plumber arrived in my room in less than 4 hours and the technician for Šárka's fridge in less than 3 hours.

That's a nice place. It's open almost all day and you can ask the receptionists to help you if you have problems or questions concerning Raab Heim or places in Linz. They are, I think, all men and they look like strict fathers but in the end they really care about you. They are usually very helpful, maybe because it's very boring to stay in a reception if nobody comes to ask you something.

The music rooms are nice. I didn't visit all of them, but in room nr. 1 and nr. 2 there are 2 vertical (upright) pianos. They're out of tune but the pedals work well. The rooms are big and there are tables and some chairs.
You can also take your own instrument (trumpet, horn, violin) and play there. Of course there are no scores here, so don't forget them! The rooms are situated in the basement, just under the offices. Ask in the reception for the key. No amplifiers are here, so if you play electric guitar or keyboard take the amp with you.

The atmosphere in the Fitness Room is sometimes sad : few people, old and dirty equipment, small rooms.
There are also 2 new exercise bikes and some weights. Just look at the photos.
The Gym is better. Here are hold many courses and we can also play soccer on Sunday (thanks to people from REFI).

The Raab Heim is the highest building of the whole district. It has 12 floors and a (theoretically) accessible roof. In practice it is locked and you can't reach it. It was considered too dangerous probably.
Anyway, from the 12th floor you also have a nice view. So nice, that hundreds of flies also want to enjoy the landscape and they fill the windows.

Raab Heim is situated very near to the hills. The landscape is really nice (here are some photos from my window or from hills near Raab Heim).
It's also very near to the university (10 minutes walking).
Supermarkets are not so far (10 Minutes to Hofer, the cheapest one, 5 minutes to Winkler Markt). McDonald's is 10 minutes away.
The local tram (called Bim) station is 5 minutes away.
You can reach the Danube walking in 15 minutes. I really suggest you take a trip to Pleschinger See (less than 15 minutes).
You need about 25-30 minutes to reach the City Center and 40-45 minutes to reach the train station.

Builders are relentless. They're all over the building drilling holes, making pipes, moving doors and windows. And they must be science fiction fans. Just look the "Alien" -like way they left the 6th floor corridor. We have to call Ellen Ripley and her flamethrower to get rid of them!

Corridors are enriched by many beautiful posters that'd maybe look better in a museum. In the photo, a very recent poster, which still shows the DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik), the CSSR (CzechoSlovak Socialist Republic) and Germany.
